The Human Body 3/4H

Every Thursday afternoon for term three 3/4H students have been working on virtual world science tasks for the human body unit of work. One of the tasks asked them to create virtual simulations of the intestines and stomach. This is very challenging as they all must learn how to transform 3D objects such as cylinders, torus or hemispheres to create a likeness of these organs. Some students are using x,y,z coordinates to manipulate their prims (3D virtual geometric objects are known as ‘primitives‘ or ‘prims’ for short.). The lessons fly by but the class has done a fantastic job. It is also wonderful to have access to a class set of laptops for this project.

North Coast Rugby League

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On Friday 9th May Mr Pike had the privilege of taking away 3 talented rugby league players from Coffs Harbour Public School to Grafton to try out  for the North Coast Rugby League Team.  Malakhi, Mabior and Franklin (yellow jerseys) had previously been selected in not only the local district team, but also the Mid-North Coast team, which in itself is a tremendous accomplishment.

All three boys didn’t let themselves or our school down and fortunately Malakhi and Mabior were successful in being selected in the North Coast side. They will now travel to Lennox Head later this month to participate in a two day camp and then early in June they will travel to Cronulla to take part in the NSW State Rugby League tournament, where they will have the opportunity to be selected in the NSW U11’s Rugby League team. Congratulations boys and we all wish you luck in Cronulla!

Mr Pike

Here is a video some of the rugby boys helped put together this afternoon of training and PJ even performs the Maori Haka which is a signature game opener with the NZ All Blacks team. Afterwards the boys were shown a video of a 10 year old New Zealand boy who gets a big surprise from the All Blacks one morning at the breakfast table. They were very jealous of the paddock rugby field. We think there needs to be a Weetbix ad with the Wallabies too. At the end of the video the boys start comparing who eats the most Weetbix each morning 😉

It was great to get away from the computer and spend some time with these rugby mad boys!

On Friday 30th August our school’s Junior Boys Relay Team travelled to Lismore for the North Coast Athletics Carnival. The team comprising of Mabior, Franklin, Daniel and Malakhi won their heat and made the final where they came 1st and are the 2013 North Coast Champions. They have now qualified to represent our school at the State Athletics Championships at Homebush in Sydney on the 16th and 17th October. Mabior will also compete in the 800m which he won and the 200m and long jump where he placed 3rd. Awesome work Mabior!
We are extremely proud of these boys’ achievements and wish them well when they compete in Sydney.

Newcastle Knights ‘Tackle Bullying’ Campaign

Coffs Harbour Public School school was lucky to host two players from the Newcastle Knights as part of the National Rugby League’s (NRL) ‘Tackle Bullying’ campaign.
The NRL stars spoke about Rugby League’s powerful new anti-bullying message and all up it will be delivered to a record of more than 120,000 students across Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Samoa as a part of a game-wide campaign.

The 2013 Community Carnival will deliver important lessons on the effects of bullying and the importance of building positive self-esteem through a powerful DVD and other resources.
Rugby League’s 12th annual Community Carnival is the ideal platform for launching the NRL’s ‘Tackle Bullying’ campaign with the most recent Australian Government study into bullying revealing one in four (27%) Australian students (Year 4-9) are bullied frequently.
“Community Carnival is a special time of year where a huge contingent of players travel far and wide to visit those areas that don’t usually get the chance to come face-to-face with NRL players,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr Mattiske, said.
This year’s ‘Tackle Bullying’ message is an important one, with the effects of bullying well documented in the media.

“We know from experience that students listen when NRL players visit the classroom and if our players can help provide them with some tools to combat bullying then hopefully we can make a positive difference to their lives.”
“If students are equipped with the skills to deal with bullying from a young age, as well as being taught the harmful effects that bullying can have, hopefully one day every student will feel safe at school and online.

“I believe the most important lesson in dealing with bullying is to speak out against it and that is exactly what the NRL is encouraging students to do.”
One activity the NRL players will facilitate throughout Community Carnival is ‘drop-a-note box’, which sees classmates write anonymous positive affirmations about their fellow students, with the goal to build self-esteem and self-confidence.

The ‘drop-a-note box’ activity has been used by Bulldogs coach Des Hasler on his players in recent years, during which time his teams (Bulldogs and Sea Eagles) have played in four of the past six Grand Finals, winning two.

“It is simple but powerful and I have seen the benefits an activity like that has in helping to build an individual’s self-esteem and self-confidence,” said Hasler.

The session with the Newcastle Knights was fantastic and all our staff and students are huge rugby fans so were very excited to have the players visit the school. The NRL have also made an excellent video that supports their message and it can be viewed here. I suggest everyone watch it and maybe even watch it a few times. Coffs Harbour Public School does not tolerate bullying in any form and our school motto Courtesy and Honour underpins all our relationships within the school community.

Remember to always Be Safe, Be Fair, Be Kind and Be Cooperative and don’t be a bystander!

A big thank you to Mr Pike for organising the visit.

Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic

Students in Grades 1-4 attended the Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic  and met the players whilst learning some great rugby skills along the way. I think the Titans may have some new fans!

NSW PSSA Athletics Championships 2012

Joban, Frank, Mabior and Daniel will be running their fastest when they compete in the New South Wales PSSA Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park. They have qualified for the 4 x 100 metre relay and Joban has also qualified for the 8 years boys 100m. The boys have a number of heats to run and if successful they will qualify for the final. A big thank you to Mrs Leeson for coaching the team 🙂 Sam Almaliki from Cricket NSW also sent a wonderful Tweet to the school.

The following is a summary of part of IAAF relay rules:
(i) Relays shall be run on a circular track (4 x 100 metres).
(ii) A team shall consist of 4 runners and a baton shall be carried in hand.
(iii) The baton shall be passed within the take-over zone. The take-over zone shall be 20m long. Members of a team other than the first athlete may commence running not more than 10 metres outside the take-over zone. A distinctive line shall be drawn to denote this extended limit.
(iv) All runners must remain in their allotted lane until all teams are clear of the take-over zone.
(v) If the baton is dropped it shall be recovered by the athlete who dropped it. If it drops out of the team’s lane the athlete may leave the lane provided they don’t lessen the distance covered and no other athlete is impeded.
(vi) Check-Marks. An athlete may place one check-mark (to assist the baton change over) on the track within his own lane, by using adhesive tape, maximum 5cm x 40cm, of a distinctive colour which cannot be confused with other permanent markings. No other check marks may be used.

Athletics Carnival Field Events 2012

Our athletics carnival still went ahead despite a good drenching the night before.  The sun was shining and the skies blue as students headed out to the field events. Mrs Booth didn’t catch all the results but did learn that Lewis threw a 3Kg  shot (metal ball) 7.40 meters. The male world record holder for shot put is Randy Barnes, from America, who threw a 7.260kg shot 23.12 meters. The womens’s shot put world record holder is Natalya Lisovskaya , from Russia, who threw a 4kg shot 22.63 meters. Keep on training Lewis!

Here is a video of the current World Champion, Ryan Whiting, who threw the shot 22 meters earlier this year at the World Championships.
