Virtual Thursday

What a super busy Thursday with sim-on-a-stick. I think all the students knew holidays were coming up as Mrs Booth has a pile of USBs to load for holiday virtual building and the library was completely full with students all sharing ideas and building. The girls created a high and long jump plus swimming pool on the Olympic sim and the boys were just building, building and building! It is truly amazing what can be accomplished in a 45 minute lunch time session and the thinking power and engagement is remarkable.

Mrs Booth was also in 4P finishing up their virtual world learning introduction and the students had a brilliant time questing to win the prize of a Freddo frog .  Thanks again to wonderful student expert Chris, from 5M,  for assisting and supporting their learning. Mrs Booth will be with 4EA and 5N next term and now has to create a quest on body systems (4EA) and the Antarctica  (5N)  which should keep her busy over the next few weeks 🙂

2M Tower Building

2M were applying their measurement skills in calculating and building towers as tall as individual students. It was hard for some as the towers got higher they started to lean to one side. It always pays to walk around your builds to make sure they are straight!

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it: A Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion, resting their elbows on it, and talking over its head. “Very uncomfortable for the Dormouse,” thought Alice; “only, as it’s asleep, I suppose it doesn’t mind.”

The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it. “No room! No room!” they cried out when they saw Alice coming. “There’s plenty of room!” said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large arm-chair at one end of the table.

Storypath Unit -The Parade – Stage 1

Why do communities have parades? What makes people of various cultures special? Students explore the cultural diversity of their community by creating a story about parades and becoming the parade planners in their story. They work together to design and plan the parade, as well as develop the characters in the parade. As planners, students learn how to overcome objections to the parade route.

Last Thursday Stage 1 had their wonderful parade followed by a mini-Olympics with many countries being represented. They had been completing the Storypath unit ‘The Parade’  over the term culminating in their own parade. It was very windy and warm but the participants and athletes competed enthusiastically and displayed lots of team work. Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to the Coffs Drumline for leading the parade out!

Koala Lou by Mem Fox Readers Theatre

Stage 1 EAL students recently spent two lessons creating a readers theatre performance around the book Koala Lou by Mem Fox. Pyke from 5N re-read the book to them and they then had a sequencing task before creating the characters and props needed for the performance. Narrators rehearsed their lines and the final performance was a tribute to the students. Well done everyone 🙂

Pyke reads the story to the students.

EAL Gardening

The EAL students were gardening again with Ms Scouller and also made labels from recycled plastic rubbish. It was another beautiful Spring day and perfect for planting some more vegetables, herbs and fruit.

Being Australian HSIE Unit Wax Museum

Stage 2 had a wonderful time presenting their wax museum of famous Australians as part of their Stage 2 HSIE unit ‘Being Australian’. The students spent weeks researching their famous Australian and then on a very hot and windy Thursday the museum was ready and open to visitors. It was brilliant!  The students’ put a lot of effort into their presentations and costumes to make it as authentic as possible. A big thank you to all the family members who came, the students’  loved having you there 🙂

Here are some images and video from the day. Sorry about the wind noise on the video but the wind wasn’t cooperating.
