Principal’s Report

This is my last newsletter from Coffs Harbour Public School as I have recently been appointed as Principal to South Grafton Public School beginning on Monday October 21.
It is with great difficulty that I say my good byes to this wonderful and amazing school and community. My family home is Yamba and I have had to make the difficult decision so I can be closer to home.
The last three and a half years have been enormously rewarding for me in my role as school principal of Coffs Harbour Public School. I have always found our staff to be a very hardworking and extremely dedicated, supportive, professional group of people who genuinely want the best for the students at our school. We have worked tremendously hard to achieve wonderful outcomes for all students. We have developed one of the best reputations in the district in all areas of education, including academic, sporting and technology and we have dedicated ourselves to constantly improving and creating.
Our school has developed a name for always being willing to embrace new concepts and programs and as a result we have always been on the ‘cutting edge’ of quality educational delivery. I would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support.
I would like to acknowledge the outstanding achievements by our students who have always had the capacity to meet any challenge they are faced with.
Our students have achieved results comparable to any school in NSW both private and public.
The support our community has provided our school across so many areas has also been truly outstanding and I thank all our families for their very positive support.
I leave the school a very proud principal.
Miss Janelle Bullen will be relieving principal for the remainder of this term.
Kind regards to all for the remainder of 2013.

Virtual Rainforest Project: MinecraftEdu/Sim-on-a-Stick

Coffs Harbour Public School uses virtual world technology in many of its learning areas. This term all stage 3 and some stage 2 students are studying the HSIE unit ‘Rainforests’. Part of the requirements of this unit is going to be completed using Sim-on-a-Stick (virtual world on a USB) and MinecraftEdu. The project outline is:

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Australian rainforests through creation of a simulated Australian rainforest and presentation treehouse. eg the Daintree using virtual world technology (Sim-on-a-Stick/MinecraftEdu). Students research information on traditional land owners/Indigenous peoples, rainfall, location, human impact, dangers i.e., species extinction, and geographical features and demonstrate understanding using virtual notecards and scripting. Students will include in their simulation insects, reptiles, birds, plants, frogs and fish, an ecosystem display board and other flora and fauna specific to the area using a range of sources and display these in their tree house and specific locations within their rainforest. Students will also simulate emergent growth, canopy, understorey and forest floor. Student pairs will present their builds in Week 9.

This is the first time MinecraftEdu is being used at Coffs Harbour P.S. and with the engagement displayed today in Miss Callinan’s class this project should allow the students to really engage with the task. MinecraftEdu has been developed by Finnish and American teachers with Mojang (the creator’s of Minecraft) and contains some fantastic tools specifically targeted for the classroom teacher and student. Mrs Booth and Miss Callinan love the ‘freeze students’  button!  Here is a hyperlink for further information about minecraft in education 🙂

Les and Maia: Ecological issue in our local catchment area website

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Students are introduced to the Murder under the Microscope website and focus on the biodiversity of their local catchment area. They look at scientific terminology and create a word bank for their own use. They complete an online quiz that investigates cause and effect in ecosystems. Student pairs must also create a website that identifies an ecological issue in the local catchment area and educates others about this issue and why it is important to preserve and protect it. The website will include an Action Plan that shows others in the community what they can do to reduce their ecological footprint.

Les and Maia were part of a science enrichment group last term focussing on ecological issues in our local catchment area. Much of this project required the students to be self sufficient when researching and compiling information. For some students this was a challenge and others found the lots of fun though still hard work as they had to juggle other school work commitments etc. Enrichment projects require students to be self motivated and develop good problem solving strategies as the tasks require higher order thinking processes and self-regulation. For year six students projects of this nature are a great introduction into what is required in high school and two students in particular did a great job creating their website. Maia and Les ran with the task from the beginning, sharing the work load and discussing how they would approach certain aspects of the project. They only required teacher support initially when introduce to creating a Weebly website. They never argued, used the resources provided (and researched  much of their own) and ultimately have done a wonderful job 🙂

Here is a link to their website: Coffs Creek and Littering Don’t Mix

Maia has also gone on to create her own personal Weebly: My Aotearoa, with permission from her dad, and it offers some wonderful advice for other students on friendship, bullying and just being happy with who you are.  Brilliant work Maia 🙂

Here is an outline of the task.

We are sailing!

Sailors with Disabilities offer a Try Sail Day Program which is designed to give disabled and disadvantaged children and young adults the opportunity to go sailing. Through our crew, SWD are able to provide positive role models, demonstrating that people with a disability do not have to be confined by it.

What a great day the staff and students had and a huge thank you to the Sailors with disAbilities program as without this great organisation the day would not be possible.
