VWBPE 2012

I am not going to get much sleep this weekend as the Virtual World Best Practises in Education 2012, 5th Annual Conference has just started and all the presentations are in Pacific time! I will be hearing the leaders in the field of virtual technology (research and teaching) in educational settings speak and today I was at a presentation by David Deeds. He is the IT Manager/Teacher at Changchun American International School and a world authority on virtual world technology in educational environments. His lecture was at 8pm Pacific time Thursday so 2pm Australian EST time Friday 🙂 The brilliant thing about this conference is that I am attending virtually so still managed to be at home in Coffs Harbour whilst my avatar sat next to someone from Rome and another from Germany…very neat and no jet lag!

Here is a link to David’s ‘slideshare’ presentation for educators and interested parents: David Deeds presentation

I will be learning much and it will be great to transfer this learning into the classroom with the students at CHPS 🙂

May you all get more sleep than me this weekend!

Heptagons, Sunflowers, Crocodiles and Captain Flint!

As I was leaving last Thursday I couldn’t help noticing the fantastic artwork class 6F had been working on. Wow, well done Mrs Firkin’s!

I also was reading their work on crocodiles and how some countries farm them for their hide. Australia’s two crocodile species are protected in the wild but their habitat is decreasing as humans move in on their territory and introduced animals such as feral pigs take their eggs. Go to this link for more information: Crocodiles

Class 5M had been looking at shapes and what a Heptagon was. Do you know? How many sides does it have? What about a Nonagon?

3C explore the ‘ou’ sound

3C was very productive as they embarked on rotational group activities focussed on literacy and specifically words with an ‘ou’ sound such as ‘cloud, sound and proud for example. One activity was using small boards and letters and the students constructing  particular ‘ou’ words; another activity was using the spelling cards which had specific tasks that the student’s had to complete, and the final activity involved playing ‘Hangman’ on the SMART Board using the spelling words for the week.  Lots of fun and learning. Class 3C were also fortunate to have Miss Kennedy to help teach them as she is completing her final Practicum for her teaching degree at Southern Cross University.

Mathew wanted to show Mrs Booth his report from a  Behind the News episode on Bat Man!  He is not the comic book hero but an amazing man who is blind and uses sonar skills to be able to ‘see’. Here is the link to the report: Bat Man BTN

Lewis’s famous Australian research project: Sir Donald Bradman

Lewis, in class 6M, is currently researching the famous Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman and Mr Murphy, his class teacher, has set him the task of creating his presentation in a virtual world. Lewis has already started building a stadium, oval, stumps and presentation boards. Mrs Booth noticed how quickly Lewis developed skills using this learning technology and it is wonderful that his teacher recognises his ability and is giving him the opportunity to deliver his project in a simulated space. Great work Lewis and what a great teacher Mr Murphy is!

Virtual World Library Club

The Library Virtual World Club is extremely popular and runs every Thursday lunchtime. It is a great opportunity for those students who are not using the sim-on-a-stick virtual world platform in their classroom to be exposed to it in a supportive manner. They can explore freely at their own pace and have lots of assistance from other students already familiar with the program if they need it. Mrs Booth is always there overseeing everyone  and ensuring the program is running smoothly. She has noticed, however, that the demand to use it is greater than the computers we have to run it, so Mrs Booth is now taking note of those who have been waiting a while and they will have first preference next Thursday.

Happy exploring

Class 4/6T love learning

Class 4/6T was busy working on various activities specific to their differing abilities and needs. Everyone was working very hard and Mrs Booth saw some fantastic work in numeracy, literacy and life skills 🙂

Class 4/6T also had the wonderful support from Marina who is currently on an university exchange program from the University of Barcelona in Spain. She is studying psychology and is spending the semester at Southern Cross University where Mrs Booth is also studying. Marina is volunteering her time to assist in the school and  we are very fortunate to have her with us. Thanks Marina!
