Wintersun Festival 2012

Who went to the Wintersun Festival at The Jetty on Saturday morning? If you love all things 40’s, 50’s and 60’s whether music, cars or lifestyle this was the place to be. Stage 1 had just finished their transport unit of work and I hope some of them visited the festival. The Lachlan steam train was also at the Coffs Harbour train station, and with rock n roll bands and quite a few Elvis fans walking about I thought I had been transported back in time! Here are some photos of the cars that were on display and I made sure I took a few photos of the Fords and Holdens in between the enormous American Chevrolets, as I know there are a few car enthusiasts at Coffs Harbour Public School 🙂

The Railway Performance by 2O

2O performed a stunning  routine to the Railway Song last Friday, June 1.

Firstly our teacher, Mrs O’Donnell, gave us a sheet of paper with the words to the song on it. After a while we learnt the actions. It was a little bit hard as we had to get perfect timing with the music.  Then we brought our clothes in for a dress rehearsal. The clothes had be dark and dusty, and we had to wear jeans because railway workers don’t wear shorts. We had to put shoe polish on our faces so we looked dirty. Railway workers get dusty and greasy. We had to put facial cream on our faces to wipe the shoe polish off.

On performance day we got a little nervous and had butterflies in our tummys. Sarah took a deep breath in the bathroom. Our class went to the new hall early to get dressed and ready for the big performance. Teira had to wear an apron and get prepared to be the kitchen lady. Jackson had to hide behind the kitchen set and be the banjo player. Luke was the captain, and the rest of the class were the railway workers.

We had to perform it for a second time after assembly had finished so Mrs O’Donnell could film it for the blog. The performance was great fun and we would like to do it again! Here is the video of our performance.

Steam Train Transport

Who had a ride on the Lachlan Valley Steam Train on the weekend? Mrs Booth was there on Saturday to watch it leave and is a big fan of steam engines. The engine is powered by steam that is created by burning coal in a firebox that is surrounded by water. When the water is hot enough it produces steam pressure necessary to power the pistons  that drive the wheels of the engine. This is a great link that explains and shows you how it all works: Haworth Village Steam Trains. If you want to see more pictures and get in contact with the Lachlan Valley Railway click here

Turn your speakers up for this video Mrs Booth took of the train leaving the station 🙂

How Ella travels to and from school

Ella travels to and from school on her dad’s motorbike, a Triumph Speedmaster. She loves it and has been riding pillion since she was 8 years old which is the legal age in NSW. Last year Ella and her dad rode to Oberon which is around 700 km south and about 9 hours on a motorbike or driving. Ella’s dad had packed a back pack full of snacks, water and her Nintendo DS to keep her occupied on the long trip and told me that only once when it was very cold and wet did Ella complain. She loves riding on the motorbike and when she is older wants to get one for herself.

Stage 1 Transport Excursion

What a fantastic excursion and magnificent weather Stage 1 had when they travelled by bus discovering and getting up close to all the forms of transport used in their community. From flight simulators and the trainee pilots at Coffs Harbour Airport to the prime movers that carry our food and other goods from Sydney to Brisbane and many other places; and finally the Coffs Harbour Railway Station where the station manager was on hand to explain how the station operates. The Country Link XPT train to Sydney was right on time!

All the students have been studying a Science and Technology unit of work related to transport and this was a wonderful way to end their learning with the students getting out into the community and seeing  the different forms of transport and their importance to so many different parts of society, not only in Coffs Harbour but nationally and internationally. How do we travel to work or school? How does our mail travel to other addresses? How do our school books arrive at the school? How would we travel to America, Europe, Africa or Asia from Australia?

Here are some videos of the big day and I think all the students and teachers slept well that night 🙂

2M perform The Transport Song by Peter Weatherall

What a great group of singers you all are 2M and I think the audience really enjoyed your performance. 2M have been studying transport for HSIE and this performance is just a part of their learning. 🙂

What transport do you use to travel to and from school?

Does your family have or do you know someone who has an electric car?
