Great Barrier Reef Unit 3/4H

3/4H this term have been studying the Great Barrier Reef. They have been making a reef on their back wall. They received a letter from the Australian Coral Reef society and have been given a chance to work in the under water sea lab. This is what happened next:

  • They researched the Great Barrier Reef
  • Applied for a job e.g biologist, botanist, scientist, research diver, tour guide, chef and vet just to name a few.
  • Drew an under water sea lab.
  • Researched clown fish, whale sharks, white and black tipped reef sharks, sea anemone , sea horses, stone-fish, cone fish, box jellyfish.
  • Made up characters for the under water sea lab.
  • Wrote information reports and persuasive texts on why it’s important to save the reef.

The class have enjoyed working on this unit and have had fun on the way.

We hope enjoy our work!

Stage 2 Toy Company

Stage 2 has been working on the Storypath unit ‘Toy Factory’ over Term 1. These units are a highly engaging program that fosters problematic thinking and higher order thinking skills as students are scaffolded through a series of learning episodes.

Originally developed in Scotland during the 1960’s, Storypath draws support from decades of experience with teachers and students.
The Episodes of a Storypath are:
Creating the Setting – Students create the setting by completing a frieze (mural) or other visual representation of the place.
Creating Characters – Students create characters for the story whose roles they will play during subsequent episodes.
Context Building – Students are involved in activities that stimulate them to think more deeply about the people and place they have created.
Critical Incidents – Characters confront problems typical of those faced by people of that time and place.
Concluding Event – Students plan and participate in an activity that brings closure to the story.

3P have been working in groups to design and develop their toys with all students assuming their particular job roles as part of the process. It is hard to work together but when each person has an identified purpose tasks are achieved and everyone is productive. It is just like working in a real toy factory. 🙂

This is an excellent 10 minute video from the Mattel Toy Factory in 1950 and the stages they went through to create a new toy. It mirrors the process Stage 2 took with their toy designs and final presentation.

Cobra 7000

Hi this is Daniel and Keanu and we have been making the Cobra 7000 for the Toy House. The Cobra 7000 can hover across land, sea/water and fly high at top speeds. The people in our group are Luke, Blain, Lionel and us. The Cobra 7000 is made from meat trays, straws, stickytape, cardboard and empty containers but when it is built properly it will be made from carbon fibre and plastic. It has a 2 year warranty and will sell for $75.96. You get free batteries and two remote controls (one is a back up controller).

Come along the to the Toy Fair on Friday at 2pm in our classroom (3/4H) to see this amazing contraption!

Storypath Unit -The Parade – Stage 1

Why do communities have parades? What makes people of various cultures special? Students explore the cultural diversity of their community by creating a story about parades and becoming the parade planners in their story. They work together to design and plan the parade, as well as develop the characters in the parade. As planners, students learn how to overcome objections to the parade route.

Last Thursday Stage 1 had their wonderful parade followed by a mini-Olympics with many countries being represented. They had been completing the Storypath unit ‘The Parade’  over the term culminating in their own parade. It was very windy and warm but the participants and athletes competed enthusiastically and displayed lots of team work. Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to the Coffs Drumline for leading the parade out!

KM and KD Storypath: The Park

How do park planners create a park for the community? What rules are needed for the park? What are the best plants and play equipment for the park? This unit provides young children with an array of problems to solve in the creation and maintenance of the park. When children are confronted with bullies, they learn strategies for responding and keeping the park a safe place for everyone. Students learn about civic participation and the importance of creating a park for everyone to enjoy. Language activities build young student’s capacity to communicate both in speaking and writing about important civic and social learning as they immerse themselves in the roles of park planners

The Great Barrier Reef

Stage 2 have been busy for this term studying the Great Barrier Reef and have enjoyed immersing themselves in their sea lab classrooms. Sea lab leaders were elected and held regular meetings on issues that effected their lab, workers and the Great Barrier Reef. Students had to apply for jobs in the labs and personal learning projects were selected from the Blooms matrix.
Here is a report from Sam on the Great Barrier Reef:
