1L Blogging with K/1L from Merrylands East Public School

As part of our Thursday Minecraft literacy project this week students from 1L responded to a blog post from Asma, a student at Merrylands East Public School who has just started blogging with her K/1L class and teacher Mr Lee Hewes. They are also mad about Minecraft 🙂 Firstly, Mrs Booth spoke about blogs and the class explored what their purpose was. Students’ then looked at our school blog to view all the visitors and countries where the visitors came from. The children were fascinated with all the different flags. Then a discussion about why it is important to publish our best work on a public blog ensued. Next, the class looked at K/L MEPS KOALAS Weebly (a brand of website) and clicked on the link to the Bodacious Bloggers. Student Asma had written a post titled Why I like Minecraft and 1L student pairs responded using quality commenting skills. Once they had written and had their comments checked they were able to submit them for moderation from Mr Hewes. Finally, the student pairs then went on to their class minecraft building project. It was an excellent literacy session and next week student pairs will be responding using their new quality commenting skills to more posts from the fantastic K/1L students at Merrylands East P.S. 🙂

2M Virtual World Maths Friday

NSW Maths Syllabus: S1/Grade 2

MS1.1 Estimates, measures, compares and records lengths and distances using informal units, metres and centimetres.

MS1.3 Estimates, measures, compares and records volumes and capacities using informal units.

SGS1.1 Sorts, describes and represents 3D objects including cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms, and recognises them in pictures and the environment.

Today 2M spent a large part of the day investigating 3D objects, measurement and volume. The class rotated through different activities as they explored and worked mathematically to engage with maths tasks. They used the virtual technology of Minecraft and Sim-on-a-Stick to explore volume and shape. Each minecraft block is 1 metre cubed. The students used both the iPad and PC version of Minecraft to work through activities and further develop their problem solving skills skills as they explored this fabulous virtual space. Finally the students had to measure, using centimetres and metres, cardboard boxes ( rectangular prisms) and construct real life versions of the grass block (cube). It was a great day and all were on task and worked brilliantly. Fantastic work 2M 🙂

2-O Assembly Item – Measurement

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

2-O finally got to present their assembly item on measurement today. The students had looked at different forms of measurement in maths with Mrs O’Donnell and created a special interactive video. They had to time their stage parts down to the second and though they were nervous did an excellent job. There were lots of gasps from the audence when they saw the pictures of the longest plane! Great job 2-O 🙂

Here is the video presentation the students used and you will need to skip ahead when the screen changes to black as these are the change over sections for each student group and last for 20 seconds.

Human Society & Its Environment: Workers in the Community

This unit provides opportunities for students to explore the different roles and responsibilities of people with whom they interact in their family, school and community.

The unit focuses on how these roles and responsibilities connect to meet needs and wants.

  • personal needs and wants
  • the function of families and family activities
  • roles, rights and responsibilities in the family and at school
  • the roles and responsibilities of people who work in services in the community, both paid and unpaid
  • interconnections between technologies, workers, users and the environment.

Stage 1 and Kindergarten had a visit today from the NSW Fire Department as part of the Workers in the Community HSIE learning unit. Students were taken through emergency procedures and also learnt about the different roles the fire brigade have in their community. It was an excellent visit and it went far too quickly. Thank you to the Coffs Harbour Fire Brigade for taking the time out to visit our school 🙂

2M Feathers, Fur or Fins

In 2M we have been learning about wet and dry environments and the animals that live in these environments. For our assembly item we created a Power Point presentation with photos of our faces superimposed on animal bodies. While the presentation was displayed on the ‘big screen’ we sang the song Feathers, Fur and Fins by Don Spencer.

Feather, Fur or Fins by Don Spencer is available on iTunes for A$1.69

Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic

Students in Grades 1-4 attended the Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic  and met the players whilst learning some great rugby skills along the way. I think the Titans may have some new fans!

Kinder and S1 show us their Gangnam Style!

Kindy and Stage 1 had a bit of extra fun before the last bell today and showed their teachers how to dance Gangnam Style! The song is written and performed by South Korean artist PSY and is about the Gangnam (pronounced Kang-nam) district of South Korea, and the style and culture of the people: Gangnam District Information

The music video has had over 840 million views – Wow, the world loves this song!

If you would like a holiday craft activity how about this: Gangnam_Style_Machine

Preparation You need: A printer, scissors, glue, ruler to make your work easier, a cutter, tweezers, and tiny scissors used for cutting out silhouettes. This is tricky so you will probably need a patient adult, older family member or friend.

Storypath Unit -The Parade – Stage 1

Why do communities have parades? What makes people of various cultures special? Students explore the cultural diversity of their community by creating a story about parades and becoming the parade planners in their story. They work together to design and plan the parade, as well as develop the characters in the parade. As planners, students learn how to overcome objections to the parade route.

Last Thursday Stage 1 had their wonderful parade followed by a mini-Olympics with many countries being represented. They had been completing the Storypath unit ‘The Parade’  over the term culminating in their own parade. It was very windy and warm but the participants and athletes competed enthusiastically and displayed lots of team work. Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to the Coffs Drumline for leading the parade out!
