CHPS students speak at Southern Cross University

Students Teira, Sharlah, Wakjira and Luke travelled to Southern Cross University to speak at a lecture Mrs Booth was giving. The lecture focused on virtual world technology and how it was being used at Coffs Harbour Public School (CHPS) so successfully. It was also being recorded and beamed to two other campuses in Lismore and the Gold Coast.  There were many pre-service teachers in the audience and the students’ had prepared speeches about their individual experiences with Sim-on-a-Stick,  the platform we use at the school to access our virtual world technology. Wow! What amazing ambassadors these students were and how well they spoke, bringing tears to some of the audience. Mrs Booth was extremely proud of all of them and the courtesy and manners they displayed to other lecturers, tutors and university students on campus was exemplar. Afterwards the students’ toured the campus with the library and Co-op book store being the most popular before finishing off in the main office selecting university brochures. Sharlah was especially interested in science and made sure she took a brochure on every science degree offered at SCU! Teira chose one on education…good choice Teira 🙂 Luke and Wakjira are interested in Zoology.

What a wonderful morning.

The longest maths lesson…

Today the grade 3 students from 3/4H started their maths virtual project using Sim-on-a-Stick and it was very challenging BUT 1 hour and 50 minutes later they were still working on their maths tasks! Mrs Booth and Mr Easey had to push them out the door to eat when the bell rang for lunch but 10 minutes later they were all lined up and ready to go again. It was brilliant and who would have thought that maths could keep a class of very different learners coming back for more. It was engagement with a capital E. It is also excellent that Mr Easey is joining us for our maths lessons every Wednesday to learn all about virtual world technology and how it can be used for mathematical outcomes. We might need a few of our student experts to give him a hand though 🙂 One thing Mrs Booth noticed was how well the students navigated the tools when allowed to ‘play’. They didn’t realise how hard they were actually working and when the older students, who have used the technology last year, came in at lunchtime and saw SoaS was running they automatically started to assist the younger students. Wonderful stuff when the student becomes the teacher.

By the way if you are wondering who ‘Ener’ is she is the amazing person who packages OpenSim and enables it to be used on a USB.  Thanks Ener 🙂

Grade 3 Virtual Maths Project

Both 3/4H and 3P are using our virtual world technology Sim-on-a-Stick to complete mathematical tasks based on the NSW maths syllabus substrands of Data, Measurement, Space and Geometry. Each week they will complete tasks relating to these outcomes using a combination of both the virtual space and their work books. At the moment our virtual world platform does not have access to the Internet, if we did the students would be able to use Google Docs to document their answers and graph their data using the spreadsheet and graphing tools in-world. All grade 3 students will have access to this program and already they are extremely engaged as they navigate the tools and space. This technology encourages problem based learning and is inherently mathematical  but by creating virtual workstations the tasks become more explicit in nature. Also by having small groups the students should develop a deeper understanding of the more abstract concepts.  Already today within 30 minutes of using the program students from 3P were sharing their newly acquired knowledge with other students in their group and this was wonderful to see. Lots of  learning happening  though they all just think  “the game” is great fun!

Here is a slideshow of Mrs Booth’s avatar visiting the Southern Cross and Warwick University maths spaces. There is some  tricky building here!

The Human Body Stage 2

Stage 2 have recently finished the ‘Human Body’ unit of learning. The students created powerpoint presentations, quizzes,  completed virtual activities, visual art and written projects. They were extremely busy and engaged as they immersed themselves in their learning. Click on the Youblisher book to view examples of their work. Great work everyone 🙂

Virtual Antarctic information reports

As part of their English information report unit students from 5M also had to complete a virtual element by building the Antarctic animal they had been researching. They then needed to capture and upload their information report to produce a display. The students worked in groups and only had four lessons to complete the building component. They all did a great job sharing the task and collaborating on ideas. They used books and images when building to obtain authenticity. The Humpback whales look wonderful as they are feeding on krill 🙂 The other animals researched were:

Virtual World Library Club is Full

Thursdays virtual world library club is proving so popular that Mrs Booth will have to select the classes that will be able to access it for the final 5 weeks of Term 4. This Thursday, 22 November, will be Kindergarten. This will be fairer to those younger students wanting to access our schools virtual sim and Minecraft loaded iPads. The library club has grown immensely and it is amazing to see what students are creating not only with building but also cooperative game play. Many students also come in to work on their virtual projects for class 🙂 Great stuff!

3/4HE build a 3D stomach and intestines

3/4HE worked extremely hard as they started on the second quest activity for their virtual anatomy unit. They have to build a stomach with intestines that are the correct length. This is a very demanding task but already it was fantastic to see the students using the more complex building tools from the virtual program to manipulate their 3D  shapes. They were also using the measuring tools correctly and were able to correctly size the small intestine which is actually very long. Super job 3/4HE 🙂

A big thank you to Michael from 5N for assisting in the class.

Hard Fun in a Virtual World

“These rapidly changing times challenge educators to find areas of work that are hard in the right way” Seymour Papert

Mrs Booth introduce virtual world technology through Sim-on-a-Stick to two new classes yesterday a 3/4 composite and a class in the special education unit. She is also working with two grade 5 classes over Term 4. As the students engaged with the program she noticed how intuitive it seemed to be but also how these students immediately started sharing their knowledge with their computer neighbours and others. She suddenly became the observer as the students adopted the teacher role without hesitation. Research tells us how 3D worlds are highly immersive, creative and engaging but it also informs us that this technology is problematic therefore pushing the student to engage the much higher order thinking gears necessary to navigate, create and achieve success in complex situations. No wonder virtual world technology is used across the world for GATS (gifted and talented student) programmes.
Mrs Booth regularly attends professional development through the PLANE organisation and recently was introduced to the work of Seymour Papert (a great mathematician and pioneer of computers in education) and his concept of hard fun. This resonated strongly with her as he writes that work needs to be matched to the individual and relevant to the culture of their time. As educators we need to create learning projects that will connect strongly with students pushing them to use knowledge to drive through problems rather than giving up, and ultimately develop powerful skills for their future life. Virtual worlds nail this in buckets. By creating a challenging learning quest/project within the virtual environment the student is already highly engaged and motivated and can now engage deeply with the task in order to master it. As Papert writes this is work that is “hard in the right way” because the student develops self-regulation, with sim-on-a-stick almost immediately, and is self-driven to complete the work.
This is backed up by the line-up of students outside the library at lunchtime waiting to come in to use the computers to continue working on the virtual projects and quests. You cannot ask for more than that!

Virtual Thursday

What a super busy Thursday with sim-on-a-stick. I think all the students knew holidays were coming up as Mrs Booth has a pile of USBs to load for holiday virtual building and the library was completely full with students all sharing ideas and building. The girls created a high and long jump plus swimming pool on the Olympic sim and the boys were just building, building and building! It is truly amazing what can be accomplished in a 45 minute lunch time session and the thinking power and engagement is remarkable.

Mrs Booth was also in 4P finishing up their virtual world learning introduction and the students had a brilliant time questing to win the prize of a Freddo frog .  Thanks again to wonderful student expert Chris, from 5M,  for assisting and supporting their learning. Mrs Booth will be with 4EA and 5N next term and now has to create a quest on body systems (4EA) and the Antarctica  (5N)  which should keep her busy over the next few weeks 🙂
