North Coast Rugby League

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On Friday 9th May Mr Pike had the privilege of taking away 3 talented rugby league players from Coffs Harbour Public School to Grafton to try out  for the North Coast Rugby League Team.  Malakhi, Mabior and Franklin (yellow jerseys) had previously been selected in not only the local district team, but also the Mid-North Coast team, which in itself is a tremendous accomplishment.

All three boys didn’t let themselves or our school down and fortunately Malakhi and Mabior were successful in being selected in the North Coast side. They will now travel to Lennox Head later this month to participate in a two day camp and then early in June they will travel to Cronulla to take part in the NSW State Rugby League tournament, where they will have the opportunity to be selected in the NSW U11’s Rugby League team. Congratulations boys and we all wish you luck in Cronulla!

Mr Pike

Here is a video some of the rugby boys helped put together this afternoon of training and PJ even performs the Maori Haka which is a signature game opener with the NZ All Blacks team. Afterwards the boys were shown a video of a 10 year old New Zealand boy who gets a big surprise from the All Blacks one morning at the breakfast table. They were very jealous of the paddock rugby field. We think there needs to be a Weetbix ad with the Wallabies too. At the end of the video the boys start comparing who eats the most Weetbix each morning 😉

It was great to get away from the computer and spend some time with these rugby mad boys!

Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic

Students in Grades 1-4 attended the Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic  and met the players whilst learning some great rugby skills along the way. I think the Titans may have some new fans!

All Schools Rugby League Carnival

On Friday 22 July, two teams competed in the All Schools Rugby League Carnival – under 10’s and an Open division. The under 10’s drew in their grand final but unfortunately lost in extra time. The Open’s team also made the grand final. Both teams returned to school with Runner’s Up trophies. Well done boys!

Class 4P Explore the Newspaper

Class 4P and Mr Pike were busy this morning trying to find all the different categories in the local newspaper-The Coffs Coast Advocate. They discovered there are many different bits of information in the newspaper such as: local, national and world news, advertising, rural information, schools page, games and quizzes, sport, letters to the editor, TV guide, property guide, plus many more categories.

Grace found information on a proposed mine and drilling  that many of the local community do not want as it could create possible environmental damage to both flora and fauna. I hope Grace will write a report about this as she had so much knowledge to share with me about this issue when I spoke to her.

Mr Pike also spoke about the difference between fact and fiction and how they were important when reading the newspaper. Is a newspaper factual or fictional reading, or maybe a bit of both?

The students had already been working on exposition texts and Chloe wrote an excellent argument on why animals should not be kept in cages. She had created a strong case against keeping animals in cages and her illustration was wonderful.

I had a great time visiting Class 4P and also noticed Mr Pike was a bit of a Sharks fan….funnily enough when I was in Class 6M later on in the day I noticed Mr Murphy had a Rabbitohs clock. I’m a Wallabies fan myself 🙂
