We get our cricket packs!

Congratulations to Mrs Doust on her fantastic support and organisation of this activity, it was a great success and the students learned some fantastic sporting and life skills in the process. This is what sport is all about!

Here is a recent communication from Cricket NSW’s Sam Almaliki, also a former ESL student, which sums up the program.
This week marks Refugee Week, an annual event across the country which highlights the positive contributions made by refugees to our society. The theme for this year is “Restoring Hope”. More details here http://www.refugeeweek.org.au/ Over the last 5 weeks, one of our 12 Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET Centres at Coffs Harbour Public School has been engaging 25 ESL students, all of whom are refugees with exception to one. Through the various fun activities and games at each session the kids have been having great fun. More importantly, there has been a remarkable improvement observed by Staff in the social skills and self-esteem of all participants. When one reflects deeply, these are the truly priceless outcomes that our sport is a wonderful vehicle for.
I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work that is being carried out by teacher Wendy Doust from Coffs Harbour P.S and our two CPO Staff, Caitlin and Brendan who have done a splendid job. I should add we have also had the support of Anglicare who have been providing bus lifts to the kids after each session. Next week, which will be the final session we are looking forward to holding a BBQ, a club registration and graduation for the participants and their families. Am very proud of the work we are doing as a collective through our commitment to the Multicultural Communities of NSW. Tomorrow morning I will be representing Cricket NSW at a Western Sydney Department of Education Refugee Week event as the keynote speaker. I will be sharing with students the power of our sport to restore hope for happiness, developing a strong Australian identify and being part of the wider community.
Kind Regards,

ESL Cricket Presentation and BBQ

The Cricket NSW Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET program came to a close this week and Sam Almaliki, a former ESL student himself, from Cricket NSW flew up from Sydney to man the BBQ and give a wonderful speech complementing our brilliant ESL teacher, Wendy Doust. Garang, our school captain, presented the coaches and Sam with certificates of appreciation and all the students who participated receive a cricket kit that should keep them busy over the holidays!

One thing we noticed was that the drink cans had Olympic themes on them, and when we stacked them together they read ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi’ a very useful phrase to know 🙂

Howzat! Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET Program

What a beautiful winters afternoon and it was perfect for honing some cricket skills. Cricket NSW Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET program, at Coffs Harbour Public School,  is delivered in partnership with Coffs Cricket Club and is instilling excellent fielding, ball and bat skills through fun activities and games. Many of the ESL (English secondary language) students are playing cricket for the first time and displaying excellent skills that may lead them onto playing in the the school cricket club and perhaps even further. The program runs for 6 weeks and finishes up next Tuesday with a BBQ and presentation. All parents and friends are welcome to attend 🙂 Mrs Booth did notice that there were some pretty talented students out in the field that showed plenty of promise (she loves cricket). Keep practising everyone as it’s not too long before the season starts again!

Lewis’s famous Australian research project: Sir Donald Bradman

Lewis, in class 6M, is currently researching the famous Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman and Mr Murphy, his class teacher, has set him the task of creating his presentation in a virtual world. Lewis has already started building a stadium, oval, stumps and presentation boards. Mrs Booth noticed how quickly Lewis developed skills using this learning technology and it is wonderful that his teacher recognises his ability and is giving him the opportunity to deliver his project in a simulated space. Great work Lewis and what a great teacher Mr Murphy is!
