Class 1B and 3/4H recently performed at the Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod and then at the Coffs Harbour collective Schools Spectacular concert. 1B performed a song from One Direction and 3/4H had a distinctly martial arts theme with Kung Fu Fighting. Mrs Booth caught the two classes before they headed out for rehearsals and 3/4H even provided her with an impromptu performance 🙂

2M Virtual World Maths Friday

NSW Maths Syllabus: S1/Grade 2

MS1.1 Estimates, measures, compares and records lengths and distances using informal units, metres and centimetres.

MS1.3 Estimates, measures, compares and records volumes and capacities using informal units.

SGS1.1 Sorts, describes and represents 3D objects including cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms, and recognises them in pictures and the environment.

Today 2M spent a large part of the day investigating 3D objects, measurement and volume. The class rotated through different activities as they explored and worked mathematically to engage with maths tasks. They used the virtual technology of Minecraft and Sim-on-a-Stick to explore volume and shape. Each minecraft block is 1 metre cubed. The students used both the iPad and PC version of Minecraft to work through activities and further develop their problem solving skills skills as they explored this fabulous virtual space. Finally the students had to measure, using centimetres and metres, cardboard boxes ( rectangular prisms) and construct real life versions of the grass block (cube). It was a great day and all were on task and worked brilliantly. Fantastic work 2M 🙂

Dot Painting

3/4H developed skills in dot painting this afternoon with their teacher Mrs Currie. Firstly they watched parts of a video from Bronwyn Ferguson on dot painting and then they went outside to collect sticks of differing sizes for their painting. The students practised carefully loading their sticks with paint and pressing them onto paper. They then used a stencil of a mask to decorate with their own patterns. It was so quiet in class as they concentrated on their work. Well done 🙂

Lester & Clyde 2M

Two fat green frogs live together in a pond. One day when old Clyde was asleep in the sun, young Lester decided to have some fun. This is a story about the pollution caused by humans and how it impacts the environment.

Here is a fun paper animation of the life cycle of a frog created by Studio Nos for Sesame Street.

Visual Arts in the Classrooms Term 1

The school hallways and classrooms are looking fantastic with all the examples of student written work and visual arts. Here is a quick video of  the students’ work. Mr Murphy’s classroom display is particularly impressive 😉 Mrs Firkins students were inspired by the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore which won the World Building of the Year 2012. Finally we also get a glimpse of Ms Mulrooney’s multiplying collection of classroom pets…darkling beetles, the gift that keeps on giving!

Talent Quest!

What a fantastic day! Mrs Booth dropped in for 5 minutes in the morning to collect her resources left in some classes and ended up staying for the whole day (university assignments can wait).  The talent quest was today and it was brilliant. From Casey Chambers to whip cracking our students are a talented bunch and courageous too. Fantastic effort from everyone with the short play called ‘The Remote’ winning the overall prize. The students devised and scripted the play themselves and the audience loved it. It was a simple idea with the boys staying in character to the end which is a difficult thing to do. Well done to them, all the stage winners and entrants. I am looking forward to December 2013 🙂

Disney Concert

The Arts communicate ideas, narratives and emotions showcasing unique identities and means of expression. In The Arts, students learn through experiences as artists and as audiences, acquiring skills specific to The Arts subjects and developing critical understanding that informs decision-making and aesthetic choices. Through The Arts, students learn to explore and express themselves as they discover and interpret the worlds around them, communicating ideas with current and emerging technologies and using arts knowledge and understanding to make sense of their worlds. The Arts entertain, challenge,
provoke responses and express and share the discourse and energy of communities, cultures and histories.

The Arts contribute to the development of confident and creative individuals, nurturing and challenging active and informed citizens. Learning in and through arts traditions and cultural practices fosters social competencies and aids the development of personal identity, world views and global citizenship.
ACARA 2012

Our school loves and values the performing arts and with Ms Holden, the best performing arts teacher in Australia (our opinion), teaching at our school we are able to provide CHPS students with a rich arts curriculum throughout the school year. How lucky are we! Our school year was finished off with a concert showcasing the great Walter Elias Disney and his contribution to the film and musical world 🙂

Here is the concert including the fabulous dance from presentation night it runs for approximately 40 minutes.

2012 Schools Spectacular: Our Time

Since 1984 the Schools Spectacular has grown to become more than just a showcase highlighting the talents of the students of New South Wales public schools. It is an iconic cultural event incorporating students from diverse backgrounds and communities from the length and breadth of the state.
The Schools Spectacular is a world-class arena production and one of the largest annual events of its calibre anywhere in Australia – and arguably the world. From its ability to produce national and international stars, to its role in promoting inclusiveness and reconciliation, the Schools Spectacular has no peer.

In brief, the Schools Spectacular:

  • has taken place annually at the Sydney Entertainment Centresince 1984
  • involves approximately 3600 students from over 400 schools
  • is an established and well recognised item on the Sydney live entertainment calendar
  • showcases a cast of 2000 dancers performing styles ranging from classical to hip hop
  • features a combined choir of 1300 and an 80-piece full symphony orchestra as well as jazz, stage and rock bands

What also is wonderful  is that Coffs Harbour Public School was asked to participate for a second successive year in the 29th “Our Time” Schools Spectacular which is a very rare occurrence. Nara, Kalia, Zoe, Nykol, Angus and Noah are performing in the Combined Choir along with 1,200 other NSW public School students. They have been keenly rehearsing a variety of vocal material ranging from “Ode to Joy” sung in German to the “Party Rock Anthem.” It is an exciting opportunity for these talented students who will perform in 4 performances at the Entertainment Centre on the 23rd and 24th of November. “It is such an honour to be part of such a wonderful opportunity provided to all NSW Public Education students” said our fantastic choir teacher, Ms Holden. Ms Holden is currently being mentored by Ian Jefferson, the Choral Director of the Schools Spectacular and she will be co-conducting the choir’s Moving choir item where all the mass choir stand on the main stage arena. The Schools Spectacular will be shown in coming weeks on ABC Television. Wow! Have a great time in Sydney everyone and we are very proud of you all 🙂

Here is the group caught throwing in a quick rehearsal on a very hot Thursday afternoon…
