The Human Body 3/4H

Every Thursday afternoon for term three 3/4H students have been working on virtual world science tasks for the human body unit of work. One of the tasks asked them to create virtual simulations of the intestines and stomach. This is very challenging as they all must learn how to transform 3D objects such as cylinders, torus or hemispheres to create a likeness of these organs. Some students are using x,y,z coordinates to manipulate their prims (3D virtual geometric objects are known as ‘primitives‘ or ‘prims’ for short.). The lessons fly by but the class has done a fantastic job. It is also wonderful to have access to a class set of laptops for this project.

Great Barrier Reef Unit 3/4H

3/4H this term have been studying the Great Barrier Reef. They have been making a reef on their back wall. They received a letter from the Australian Coral Reef society and have been given a chance to work in the under water sea lab. This is what happened next:

  • They researched the Great Barrier Reef
  • Applied for a job e.g biologist, botanist, scientist, research diver, tour guide, chef and vet just to name a few.
  • Drew an under water sea lab.
  • Researched clown fish, whale sharks, white and black tipped reef sharks, sea anemone , sea horses, stone-fish, cone fish, box jellyfish.
  • Made up characters for the under water sea lab.
  • Wrote information reports and persuasive texts on why it’s important to save the reef.

The class have enjoyed working on this unit and have had fun on the way.

We hope enjoy our work!

Kung Fu Fighting with One Direction!

Class 1B and 3/4H recently performed at the Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod and then at the Coffs Harbour collective Schools Spectacular concert. 1B performed a song from One Direction and 3/4H had a distinctly martial arts theme with Kung Fu Fighting. Mrs Booth caught the two classes before they headed out for rehearsals and 3/4H even provided her with an impromptu performance 🙂

Dot Painting

3/4H developed skills in dot painting this afternoon with their teacher Mrs Currie. Firstly they watched parts of a video from Bronwyn Ferguson on dot painting and then they went outside to collect sticks of differing sizes for their painting. The students practised carefully loading their sticks with paint and pressing them onto paper. They then used a stencil of a mask to decorate with their own patterns. It was so quiet in class as they concentrated on their work. Well done 🙂

Climate Clever Comes To School

Last Monday the 20th of May, Geoff Tomlins came to talk to stage 2 about our Climate Clever Energy Savers Program.

He talked to us about energy and how we can save money on our electricity bills. We learnt about renewable and non renewable sources of energy and the importance of making cleaner choices for the planet.

He set up different activity stations to help us learn about the different forms of renewable energy. We got to see how an electrical curcuit works. He had an exercise bike that was hooked up with an old washing machine motor. We had to pedal really fast to make a light bulb work. We got to see how solar panels work by connecting the wires to run a fan and a light and to make a buzzer sound.

We learnt some helpful ways to save energy and are going to try these out at home and in our classrooms.

Stage 2 Virtual Maths

3P and 3/4H  finished their maths lessons with Mrs Booth recently. Both 3/4H and 3P have been using virtual technology to complete tasks connected to data, measurement, space and geometry.  Though it was challenging using Sim-on-a-Stick all students have worked hard and helped each other to problem solve . The final task for 3/4H was to build a scale replica of the school library in Minecraft staying as close to the real design as possible. Some managed to finish and others still have some work to do but the fantastic thing was no body wanted to leave the lessons as they were so engaged with their tasks 🙂 We also had a discussion on perspective because some students still felt Steve, the Minecraft avatar, was 2 metres tall though the Minecraft wiki puts him at approximately 1.75 metres tall. Each Minecraft block is 1 metre cubed and students placed 2 on top of each other to check. Since we don’t have wifi yet we were unable to go into each others builds to gain a viewing perspective from within the world. The wiki states:

The player’s eye level (According to coordinates while pressing F3) is 1.62 meters. Since his eyes are 29 pixels above his feet, leaving 3 pixels above his eyes (.17m), Steve is approximately 1.79 meters tall (5’10”).

Cobra 7000

Hi this is Daniel and Keanu and we have been making the Cobra 7000 for the Toy House. The Cobra 7000 can hover across land, sea/water and fly high at top speeds. The people in our group are Luke, Blain, Lionel and us. The Cobra 7000 is made from meat trays, straws, stickytape, cardboard and empty containers but when it is built properly it will be made from carbon fibre and plastic. It has a 2 year warranty and will sell for $75.96. You get free batteries and two remote controls (one is a back up controller).

Come along the to the Toy Fair on Friday at 2pm in our classroom (3/4H) to see this amazing contraption!

3/4H Rotation Maths Groups

Tuesday maths groups in 3/4H are noisy, busy, and lots of fun with all students engaging in lots of hands on activities that really assist them in connecting with the topic. They share their knowledge and support each other as they move through the various activities. 3/4 H love maths groups! 🙂

The longest maths lesson…

Today the grade 3 students from 3/4H started their maths virtual project using Sim-on-a-Stick and it was very challenging BUT 1 hour and 50 minutes later they were still working on their maths tasks! Mrs Booth and Mr Easey had to push them out the door to eat when the bell rang for lunch but 10 minutes later they were all lined up and ready to go again. It was brilliant and who would have thought that maths could keep a class of very different learners coming back for more. It was engagement with a capital E. It is also excellent that Mr Easey is joining us for our maths lessons every Wednesday to learn all about virtual world technology and how it can be used for mathematical outcomes. We might need a few of our student experts to give him a hand though 🙂 One thing Mrs Booth noticed was how well the students navigated the tools when allowed to ‘play’. They didn’t realise how hard they were actually working and when the older students, who have used the technology last year, came in at lunchtime and saw SoaS was running they automatically started to assist the younger students. Wonderful stuff when the student becomes the teacher.

By the way if you are wondering who ‘Ener’ is she is the amazing person who packages OpenSim and enables it to be used on a USB.  Thanks Ener 🙂
