Stage 1 “The Learning Zone” English Project

2M are taking part in the following English/Minecraft project. It is hard as they must learn how to navigate the space, keyboard control keys and read at the same time. This is also tricky when you have small hands and have to use both of them simultaneously. For many students this is the first time they are using this program which has been specially modified for teachers. The reading in-world and crafting of tools exposes them to different forms of sense making/comprehension as they problem solve the task. Already there are student experts on hand to guide other students who are having difficulty. Finally, the students are documenting their experiences and creating illustrations reflecting their learning.

Task:

  • Students work in group rotations to problem solve how to craft items. There are 4 different sections to complete, each one building on the previous learning. Zone 1: Crafting / Zone 2: Building Bridges / Zone 3: Making Numbers / Zone 4: Pyramid Building.
  • Students must navigate information supplied to correctly complete each task. They need to interpret the information presented, explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the task and recount the information and additional relevant learning in their English journals. Students will finally compose a brief summary of their overall experience guided by class created assessment criteria that reflects their learning, highlighting difficulties, what they enjoyed the most/least etc.

The MinecraftEdu map being used is called ‘The Learning Zone’ and was created by teacher Mr Solomon. Educators’ click on this link to access the download: The Learning Zone

2M Virtual World Maths Friday

NSW Maths Syllabus: S1/Grade 2

MS1.1 Estimates, measures, compares and records lengths and distances using informal units, metres and centimetres.

MS1.3 Estimates, measures, compares and records volumes and capacities using informal units.

SGS1.1 Sorts, describes and represents 3D objects including cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms, and recognises them in pictures and the environment.

Today 2M spent a large part of the day investigating 3D objects, measurement and volume. The class rotated through different activities as they explored and worked mathematically to engage with maths tasks. They used the virtual technology of Minecraft and Sim-on-a-Stick to explore volume and shape. Each minecraft block is 1 metre cubed. The students used both the iPad and PC version of Minecraft to work through activities and further develop their problem solving skills skills as they explored this fabulous virtual space. Finally the students had to measure, using centimetres and metres, cardboard boxes ( rectangular prisms) and construct real life versions of the grass block (cube). It was a great day and all were on task and worked brilliantly. Fantastic work 2M 🙂

Lester & Clyde 2M

Two fat green frogs live together in a pond. One day when old Clyde was asleep in the sun, young Lester decided to have some fun. This is a story about the pollution caused by humans and how it impacts the environment.

Here is a fun paper animation of the life cycle of a frog created by Studio Nos for Sesame Street.

2M Feathers, Fur or Fins

In 2M we have been learning about wet and dry environments and the animals that live in these environments. For our assembly item we created a Power Point presentation with photos of our faces superimposed on animal bodies. While the presentation was displayed on the ‘big screen’ we sang the song Feathers, Fur and Fins by Don Spencer.

Feather, Fur or Fins by Don Spencer is available on iTunes for A$1.69

2M Tower Building

2M were applying their measurement skills in calculating and building towers as tall as individual students. It was hard for some as the towers got higher they started to lean to one side. It always pays to walk around your builds to make sure they are straight!

Spiders in Space the Golden Orb Spider

There were some eco-warriors from 2-O and 2M this morning who asked for my help when some students were harming a golden orb spider that lives near Mr Hickey’s office. When this magnificent spider was saved the students wanted to know more about it and we then discussed the colour of its web and how a pair of the spiders went up to space to live in the International Space Station (ISS) for a while. The children were very interested and I promised I would put some information on the blog for them, so here it is:)

Australian Museum Golden Orb Fact Sheet

The two spiders, Gladstone and Esmeralda, were sent to the ISS on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour and lived in special containers that also housed living fruit flies for them to eat. They had special artificial sunlight that simulated day and night and scientists wanted to study them and learn how micro gravity effected them and how they spun their a webs. They lived on the ISS for 45 days before returning to Earth. Go to BioEd – Spiders in Space  for more information and some excellent teachers resources.

Stage 1 Transport Excursion

What a fantastic excursion and magnificent weather Stage 1 had when they travelled by bus discovering and getting up close to all the forms of transport used in their community. From flight simulators and the trainee pilots at Coffs Harbour Airport to the prime movers that carry our food and other goods from Sydney to Brisbane and many other places; and finally the Coffs Harbour Railway Station where the station manager was on hand to explain how the station operates. The Country Link XPT train to Sydney was right on time!

All the students have been studying a Science and Technology unit of work related to transport and this was a wonderful way to end their learning with the students getting out into the community and seeing  the different forms of transport and their importance to so many different parts of society, not only in Coffs Harbour but nationally and internationally. How do we travel to work or school? How does our mail travel to other addresses? How do our school books arrive at the school? How would we travel to America, Europe, Africa or Asia from Australia?

Here are some videos of the big day and I think all the students and teachers slept well that night 🙂

2M perform The Transport Song by Peter Weatherall

What a great group of singers you all are 2M and I think the audience really enjoyed your performance. 2M have been studying transport for HSIE and this performance is just a part of their learning. 🙂

What transport do you use to travel to and from school?

Does your family have or do you know someone who has an electric car?
