Live for Kids Cycle Classic

The Live for Kids Cycle Classic 2013 arrived in Coffs Harbour from the Gold Coast to a rousing welcome from our staff and students. They are making their way down to Newcastle and raising funds for the John Hunter Hospital along the way. The reason for stopping in was to present our special education unit with two specially modified bikes for the students to use in the playground. Thank you so much for this wonderful gift which is greatly appreciated by all the parents, staff and students. We are sure they will be a much loved and very popular play choice!

Colours Day

wordfoto

On Wednesday the school held a Colours Day to raise funds to get our fantastic relay team down to Sydney for the NSWPSSA Championships to be held on Wednesday 16 – Thursday 17 October, 2013 at the Sydney International Athletic Centre in Homebush. It was a great day though there was one rogue QLD Origin supporter spotted (there always is one lurking about in every school) amongst all the other codes 🙂 What a great day and it was wonderful to see all the students looking so colourful.

Mayor Denise Knight Visit

This morning Mayor Denise Knight visited our school to donate $1000 from the Coffs Harbour City Council towards the school achieving their fundraising goal of a new community special education mini bus and playground equipment for our special education play area. It was a wonderful visit and all the children were so excited to see her. Relieving Principal Janelle Bullen, who also heads the special education unit, was there to receive the cheque 🙂

Thank you Mayor for taking the time to visit our school and contribute to this very deserving cause.

The team comprising of Mabior, Franklin, Daniel and Malakhi won their heat and made the final where they came 1st and are the 2013 North Coast Champions. They have now qualified to represent our school at the State Athletics Championships at Homebush in Sydney on the 16th and 17th October. Mabior will also compete in the 800m which he won and the 200m and long jump where he placed 3rd. Awesome work Mabior!
We are extremely proud of these boys’ achievements and wish them well when they compete in Sydney.

Congratulations Boys!!

Josh and Tyler apply for a Minecraft Server

Josh and Tyler have been wanting their own server in Minecraft for a while now but Mrs Booth told them they needed to create a charter and convince her why they should have their own server to share with other students. They made a movie justification and submitted their rules to her today. As a result they have had their server approved. Well done boys and Ms Callinan was also impressed 🙂

Their charter states:

  • No swearing
  • No bullying
  • Build on your own land
  • Don’t break other peoples builds
  • Don’t kill other people unless in PVP
  • Don’t abuse other players in text chat
  • Do not be rude
  • The biggest rule is to be nice and kind to others!
  • If any rules are broken there is an automatic 2 week suspension

Here is their video justification for having a Minecraft server:

Afghanistan Project Virtual Building

Today students moved on to building their schools as all plans have been approved against the UNICEF child friendly schools criteria. All students bar one are using Sim-on-a-Stick virtual technology and the other student is building his model straight off his plans with the assistance of Yarrob. It was fantastic to see all the students bringing their projects to life and for many this is the first time they are using this technology which can be quite demanding. Luckily they are all very quick learners and also have an expert, Wakjira, who is wonderful in sharing his knowledge as he has been building with Sim-on-a-Stick for the past 15 months.

Great work everyone.

Family School Action Team

Coffs Harbour Public School has formed a Family School Action Team. The purpose of this team is to develop and strengthen a genuine ownership of the school as a place of learning through strategic family, community and school partnerships. Over the next couple of weeks the family school action team will meet to discuss improving partnerships between home and school. Thank you to the many parents who have participated in the discussion groups held last term. We have an enthusiastic group of students, parents and staff who have now formed the Family School Action Team.

Members of the team include:

  • Students – Olivia, Angus, Oriana, Noah
  • Parents – Vicki, Catlin, Carmel, Harmady, Nagham, Stacey, Bec
  • Staff – Debbie Newton, Kellie Melittas, Jodie Hayes, Leonie Buehler, Swe Dawng (Aye Win)

Thank you to all of the parents and students who have been contributing ideas to our suggestion box in the school office. Please, if you have some ideas about how the school and community can work more efficiently, complete a suggestion slip and send it in to school.
