“If a class turns off their lights when they don’t need them, does anyone care?

It may sound like a Zen question but educating staff and students about the need to save energy at home and in the school is at the core of the Climate Clever Energy Savers (CCES) program.

Over the past three years the program has helped schools statewide identify opportunities for reducing energy consumption. It’s a strategy that is showing results, in reducing the education department’s carbon footprint and financial bottom line.

The program stems from a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Education and Communities and the Office of Environment and Heritage and provides professional development for participating teachers, ongoing support from regional CCES staff, extensive curriculum-based resources and grant funding to support in-school energy-saving initiatives.

“Rather than doing more, teachers are being given the chance to teach things in a new way,” said Illawarra CCES coordinator Ben Anderson, adding that funding of $1,000 was available to help teachers explore the resources provided and adapt them to their needs.” Climate Clever Schools NSW DEC

Stage 2 and 3 presented their Climate Clever projects to the community on Wednesday and it was fantastic to see so many fabulous projects. Here is  just a few of the projects presented. Awesome work everyone!

Our school recently celebrated NAIDOC 2013 with a day filled with Indigenous sport, art and craft, performance, special guests, and FUN!! Our special assembly was opened with an Acknowledgement of Country by Aunty Sue who then explained this years theme We value the vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963. We then had a fantastic story from Uncle Ben of how the first didgeridoo came to be before finishing off with the brilliant Orara High School Aboriginal boys traditional dance group and speech from Uncle Barry. They boys were truly outstanding and our school community is very grateful for their performance. A big thank you also to our very special guests.

Here is video and photos from the day and hopefully I will have one soon of the Orara boys too 😉

Class 1B and 3/4H recently performed at the Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod and then at the Coffs Harbour collective Schools Spectacular concert. 1B performed a song from One Direction and 3/4H had a distinctly martial arts theme with Kung Fu Fighting. Mrs Booth caught the two classes before they headed out for rehearsals and 3/4H even provided her with an impromptu performance 🙂

2M Virtual World Maths Friday

NSW Maths Syllabus: S1/Grade 2

MS1.1 Estimates, measures, compares and records lengths and distances using informal units, metres and centimetres.

MS1.3 Estimates, measures, compares and records volumes and capacities using informal units.

SGS1.1 Sorts, describes and represents 3D objects including cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms, and recognises them in pictures and the environment.

Today 2M spent a large part of the day investigating 3D objects, measurement and volume. The class rotated through different activities as they explored and worked mathematically to engage with maths tasks. They used the virtual technology of Minecraft and Sim-on-a-Stick to explore volume and shape. Each minecraft block is 1 metre cubed. The students used both the iPad and PC version of Minecraft to work through activities and further develop their problem solving skills skills as they explored this fabulous virtual space. Finally the students had to measure, using centimetres and metres, cardboard boxes ( rectangular prisms) and construct real life versions of the grass block (cube). It was a great day and all were on task and worked brilliantly. Fantastic work 2M 🙂

2-O Assembly Item – Measurement

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

2-O finally got to present their assembly item on measurement today. The students had looked at different forms of measurement in maths with Mrs O’Donnell and created a special interactive video. They had to time their stage parts down to the second and though they were nervous did an excellent job. There were lots of gasps from the audence when they saw the pictures of the longest plane! Great job 2-O 🙂

Here is the video presentation the students used and you will need to skip ahead when the screen changes to black as these are the change over sections for each student group and last for 20 seconds.

“What Style”

This week our students had the opportunity to attend a wonderful, entertaining performance by Gillian Eastoe. Gillian has a combination of vast experience in radio, television and live music and has a vibrant personality and outstanding talent. She used popular nursery rhymes, favourite songs, props, costumes and a succession of eager volunteers. She improvised her way through a diversity of musical styles including blues, opera, country, punk, jazz, pop, rock, rap and more.

Human Society & Its Environment: Workers in the Community

This unit provides opportunities for students to explore the different roles and responsibilities of people with whom they interact in their family, school and community.

The unit focuses on how these roles and responsibilities connect to meet needs and wants.

  • personal needs and wants
  • the function of families and family activities
  • roles, rights and responsibilities in the family and at school
  • the roles and responsibilities of people who work in services in the community, both paid and unpaid
  • interconnections between technologies, workers, users and the environment.

Stage 1 and Kindergarten had a visit today from the NSW Fire Department as part of the Workers in the Community HSIE learning unit. Students were taken through emergency procedures and also learnt about the different roles the fire brigade have in their community. It was an excellent visit and it went far too quickly. Thank you to the Coffs Harbour Fire Brigade for taking the time out to visit our school 🙂

Dot Painting

3/4H developed skills in dot painting this afternoon with their teacher Mrs Currie. Firstly they watched parts of a video from Bronwyn Ferguson on dot painting and then they went outside to collect sticks of differing sizes for their painting. The students practised carefully loading their sticks with paint and pressing them onto paper. They then used a stencil of a mask to decorate with their own patterns. It was so quiet in class as they concentrated on their work. Well done 🙂

Schubert 7’s Rugby League Carnival

DSCN0145 DSCN0155 DSCN0156

On the 29th of May, 5 teams of Rugby League superstars travelled by bus to the newly named Geoff King Motors Field to compete in the annual Schubert 7’s Legends Gala day. The teams comprised of 2 highly energetic year 5/6 teams, 2 keen and enthusiastic year 3/4 teams and 1 eager and impressive girls 4/5/6 team that competed in the non-contact tag section of the competition.

All teams were successful on the day with the 5/6 teams and one of the 3/4 teams coming back with as many wins as losses. The other year 3/4 team were undefeated with some high scoring matches, and the surprise of the day was the girls tag team who made it into the final. Unfortunately, they lost their final in a thrilling extra time match to Sawtell Public School. Gabrielle was named the stand out of the whole girls competition (even with an unknown broken arm) and won herself a football.

All players represented Coffs Harbour Public School in a fantastic manner and had an extremely enjoyable day out.
