Talent Quest!

What a fantastic day! Mrs Booth dropped in for 5 minutes in the morning to collect her resources left in some classes and ended up staying for the whole day (university assignments can wait).  The talent quest was today and it was brilliant. From Casey Chambers to whip cracking our students are a talented bunch and courageous too. Fantastic effort from everyone with the short play called ‘The Remote’ winning the overall prize. The students devised and scripted the play themselves and the audience loved it. It was a simple idea with the boys staying in character to the end which is a difficult thing to do. Well done to them, all the stage winners and entrants. I am looking forward to December 2013 🙂

Disney Concert

The Arts communicate ideas, narratives and emotions showcasing unique identities and means of expression. In The Arts, students learn through experiences as artists and as audiences, acquiring skills specific to The Arts subjects and developing critical understanding that informs decision-making and aesthetic choices. Through The Arts, students learn to explore and express themselves as they discover and interpret the worlds around them, communicating ideas with current and emerging technologies and using arts knowledge and understanding to make sense of their worlds. The Arts entertain, challenge,
provoke responses and express and share the discourse and energy of communities, cultures and histories.

The Arts contribute to the development of confident and creative individuals, nurturing and challenging active and informed citizens. Learning in and through arts traditions and cultural practices fosters social competencies and aids the development of personal identity, world views and global citizenship.
ACARA 2012

Our school loves and values the performing arts and with Ms Holden, the best performing arts teacher in Australia (our opinion), teaching at our school we are able to provide CHPS students with a rich arts curriculum throughout the school year. How lucky are we! Our school year was finished off with a concert showcasing the great Walter Elias Disney and his contribution to the film and musical world 🙂

Here is the concert including the fabulous dance from presentation night it runs for approximately 40 minutes.

Special Education Rotary Christmas Party

Last Tuesday’s Special Education Rotary Christmas party was a fantastic success. We had a very large turnout of families and we also had Santa visit plus a giant Smurf and Mini and Mickey. Our students received their awards on this night. Our very big thank you to the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour South for organising the bbq and providing presents for our students. Our thanks to Ms Bullen for her organisation and our staff for their support of a fantastic night.

Surf Safety

Local Coffs Harbour Public School students know the perils of the surf and the importance of surf safety and awareness. Recently they participated in a surf awareness workshop at Park Beach with the local council lifeguards. It was a fantastic day with the students getting active with a beach run, surfing, learning the basics of resuscitation and just generally having a brilliant time as they were shown how to enjoy the surf safely. As many of our students are new to Coffs Harbour and ocean swimming  this day was of particular importance 🙂

Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic

Students in Grades 1-4 attended the Gold Coast Titans Super Clinic  and met the players whilst learning some great rugby skills along the way. I think the Titans may have some new fans!

The Human Body Stage 2

Stage 2 have recently finished the ‘Human Body’ unit of learning. The students created powerpoint presentations, quizzes,  completed virtual activities, visual art and written projects. They were extremely busy and engaged as they immersed themselves in their learning. Click on the Youblisher book to view examples of their work. Great work everyone 🙂

European Garden Spider

“A spider making his web. 1hour 30 minutes shooting, one picture every four seconds. Shot with Nikon D4 and timelapse function…”

In June students from 2O and 2M were watching our beautiful golden orb spider that had made its home near the office. When Mrs Booth was uploading a video to Vimeo for the school blog she viewed a fantastic time lapse video of a French Orb Weaving spider called  épeire diadème or an Araneus diadematus . It was made by Frenchman Jean- Michel and he has given us permission to use his amazing film on our blog. Thank you very much Jean-Michel, I am sure many students will enjoy watching this film.

Hello Kate … Yes, with pleasure … When I shot this video, I could not imagine that “my” spider would go to Australia… She is lucky 🙂

Digital Photography

Grade 5 students were introduced to digital photography as they were able to use a Canon 600D SLR camera to take images around their school courtesy of Southern Cross University. Suddenly the ordinary became interesting and the students eyes were opened as they viewed their environment with a photographers eye. Angles, lines, trees, paint on walls, an empty fruit juice popper were just some examples. They had to cope with the manual applications of the camera as they attempted to get clear, sharp images using different settings. The day was far too short but all the students worked extremely well and were highly engaged with this activity 🙂
