ESL Cricket Presentation and BBQ

The Cricket NSW Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET program came to a close this week and Sam Almaliki, a former ESL student himself, from Cricket NSW flew up from Sydney to man the BBQ and give a wonderful speech complementing our brilliant ESL teacher, Wendy Doust. Garang, our school captain, presented the coaches and Sam with certificates of appreciation and all the students who participated receive a cricket kit that should keep them busy over the holidays!

One thing we noticed was that the drink cans had Olympic themes on them, and when we stacked them together they read ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi’ a very useful phrase to know 🙂

The Shortest Day of the Year

Robert, Chris, Ben and Aryan started to make a movie trailer last Thursday, 21st June, which was the shortest day of the year, Winter Equinox,  for those living in the Southern Hemisphere. They finished it today which had slightly more daylight. It is hard creating a trailer for a movie you haven’t made as you still need a narrative for it to work. Well done boys and it is amazing how much time you need to story board, shoot, edit and produce a 1 minute trailer!

Stage 3 Gold!

Coffs Harbour Public School Stage 3 students were transported back in time to the days of the gold rush on Wednesday. During term 2, they all have been working on a HSIE unit on the discovery of gold in Australia. Last Wednesday students were involved in a variety of activities including barn dancing, making a campsite (they had to have at least 3 items including a tent per group), stockade, BBQ, weighing gold, photos, alluvial gold hunt etc. It was a great day and the students enjoyed themselves immensely. Some lost large amounts of their gold and money due to bush ranger Jerry springing up from behind the bushes, but some crafty groups kept the bulk of their gold well hidden! The stockade was very busy as was the assay office, photographers tent, and the sausage sizzle at the end 🙂

Here is our Animoto slide show it lasts for around 7 minutes

Happy prospecting

Minecraft app review and virtual building on the SMART Board

5M had to select and review either the Epic Citadel or Minecraft app for iPad on Thursday. Some students chose Epic Citadel but most chose the Minecraft app with many of the students experiencing it for the first time. They initially spent time exploring the app before writing their review.

We now have use of the school iPads in our Virtual Worlds Library Club on Thursdays at lunchtime, thank you Mr Hickey.Everyone was either mining in creative or survival mode, Mrs Booth is yet to survive one night,or creating and exploring in the other 3D immersive world of sim-on-a-stick. Due to the amount of students in the library Mrs Booth had to rotate the iPads on a regular basis. It is a little hectic, but just brilliant to watch the students so highly engaged and willing to share their knowledge and hand over the iPads to new students without complaint! Serious learning and fun at the same time 🙂

The Great Barrier Reef

Stage 2 have been busy for this term studying the Great Barrier Reef and have enjoyed immersing themselves in their sea lab classrooms. Sea lab leaders were elected and held regular meetings on issues that effected their lab, workers and the Great Barrier Reef. Students had to apply for jobs in the labs and personal learning projects were selected from the Blooms matrix.
Here is a report from Sam on the Great Barrier Reef:

Check out our fantastic movie we made using the iPad iMove app.

Winter Equinox June 21, 2012

Today is the shortest day of the year when our South Pole is tilted away from the sun giving us the least amount of sunshine. The good news is that after today we are heading for longer daylight hours again and that means warmer weather 🙂

Howzat! Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET Program

What a beautiful winters afternoon and it was perfect for honing some cricket skills. Cricket NSW Multicultural Winter in2CRICKET program, at Coffs Harbour Public School,  is delivered in partnership with Coffs Cricket Club and is instilling excellent fielding, ball and bat skills through fun activities and games. Many of the ESL (English secondary language) students are playing cricket for the first time and displaying excellent skills that may lead them onto playing in the the school cricket club and perhaps even further. The program runs for 6 weeks and finishes up next Tuesday with a BBQ and presentation. All parents and friends are welcome to attend 🙂 Mrs Booth did notice that there were some pretty talented students out in the field that showed plenty of promise (she loves cricket). Keep practising everyone as it’s not too long before the season starts again!

Luke’s Ship

Yesterday Luke showed me what he had been building for the HSIE project, a ship! I was amazed at the work that had gone into his creation and it isn’t finished yet. Though he had a few problems with his sim whilst he was showing me we managed to export a copy onto the class 5M sim and place it in the river. Then the other students decided to hop on board for a sneek peek and group photo. Great work Luke and we can’t wait to see it in its finished form 🙂

Eisteddfod 2012

What a fantastic effort by CHPS students in this years Eisteddfod, with Year 2 students placing second in their section and the ‘Car Wash’ being highly commended. All the students then went on to perform the following week in the North Coast Regions Public Schools Central Dance Festival. This was an amazing showcase of talent within the public system and as one teacher said “You send you child to CHPS for their initial dance training and finish them at Coffs Harbour High School.” The students at CH High School performed an excellent piece called ‘Dance through the Years’. If I get my hands on a video of the performance I will post it on our school blog ASAP.

Here are some snaps from our students as they prepare and perform:

Here is the Year 2 ‘Lion King’ performance recorded by a Year 2 parent. A big thank you 🙂

Have you performed in an Eisteddfod before?

Flipper written by Shane

One day the baby dolphin, Flipper, was swimming around when he saw a fishing boat. He greeted it by jumping up and clapping his fins. The captain, named Coby, saw him and said “mmmm.” He ordered his crew to throw the fishing lines out and try to catch it. The white men contiued to fish, even after feeling a bit guilty for trying to catch a baby dolphin.

An Aboriginal man saw them trying to catch it and went to tell the elders. When the elders heard of this they were furious! They told the women to make a big fish trap that would stop the boat so the dolphin could swim away, and they would stop chasing it around.

When everything was ready the elders told the dolphin to lure the boat into their trap. The dolphin did this and the boat could not move. The dolphin swam to a safe place. The elders plan had succeeded and the Aboriginal people danced and cheered. Captain Coby was mad but accepted defeat.
