School Assembly 23 March, 2012

Congratulations to our school captains for their professional conduct when attending and representing CHPS at the recent National Young Leaders Day in Brisbane. They were exemplary ambassadors and we are very proud of them. Here is a hyperlink to an interview with conservationist Giles Clark recorded after his presentation where he talks about being a good or great leader and what he thinks makes one. Terry Begley, a reporter from the ABC also interviews a YR 7 student from Emu Park  State School. National Young Leaders Day

Congratulations Josh from 4P for receiving the Mathlete of the Week award with 8740 points! Wow, that is a lot of maths. It is lucky that maths is your favourite school subject 🙂

Mrs Booth recorded the Stage 2 and 3 students singing the national anthem but apologises for the video quality as the battery was expiring.

HSIE and Science projects using sim-on-a-stick: Virtual world technology

Seeing student engagement at CHPS with virtual world technology has been amazing. Today students from 5M and 6M spent their recess and lunchtime working on their science and HSIE projects voluntarily (they asked to stay in) and Mrs Booth had to make them eat something before starting on their projects, they were so eager! In such a short period of time they have picked up skills and are sharing their knowledge with each other and therefore supporting and working collaboratively. Sim-on-a-stick isn’t perfect but for now it is the only way we can access this type of technology at the school and so are having a brilliant time being innovative with its applications. Mrs Firkin’s from class 6F was great as she let student’s from 5M and 6M use her class computers. A HUGE thank you Mrs Firkin 🙂 The Nairobi village is looking fantastic and Wakjira and Mohamed have also created a beautiful mosque. Ebony, Sarah and Miriam were working hard at building their village and Luke and Tyler made an amazing simulation of a tsunami. Chris is creating a waterfall. There were so many other groups working so hard today on their earthquake, storm and hurricane projects, and even when we had computer problems they all were able to work on their design plans or research.

Just a note for the students in the hurricane group that in Australia a hurricane is known as a tropical cyclone. Click on this hyperlink for more information: NOAA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USA)

Here is a hyperlink for the tsunami group: Tsunami

Well done everyone Mrs Booth was seriously impressed and please comment on this post if you need any support while I am out of the class and away from the school as I will try and answer your questions promptly (very quickly) 🙂
