Mrs Newton and students connect with the Uthando Project

Uthando means ‘love’ in Zulu and Mrs Newton and her students are creating plenty of that as they finish off detailing their dolls which are going to be sent away to families of child-headed households in Africa.

A child-headed household is one where the head of the house is under 18 years of age and this child takes on all the responsibilities that a parent or adult would. Because there is so much death caused by HIV and AIDS in parts of Africa many children are left as orphans. It is estimated that there are around 15 million children orphaned by this pandemic. Many of the children have no other relatives to take care of them and therefore these children are faced with a very uncertain future filled with poverty, lack of education and health care. The children are grieving and many are treated badly by their community. This is something some students at Coffs Harbour Public School may find very hard to understand.

The students and Mrs Newton have connected with the Uthando Project and have created the most beautiful dolls that will be sent to these children to provide them with comfort and playful interaction which will hopefully provide a positive outlet for them. The dolls have to be made to withstand lots of handling so are very strong and the students have done a brilliant job 🙂
